Too Many Guns

I really have been shocked at all the ridiculous things people have been saying in the US media since the shooting in Orlando.

One of the things that drives me nuts is the folks who want to talk about how guns are not dangerous.

“Guns don’t kill people; people kill people!” They shout with reckless abandon.

But of course, that’s not true. People kill people with guns.

It doesn’t take much initiative to pull a trigger. That’s why places without guns have less murders. It’s just not easy to stab someone or strangle them. You really have to get in close, take the chance of being overpowered, and feel a lot more hate.

Also, you can’t have a mass stabbing or a mass strangling. It’s not like 50 people can be killed in under two minutes with a knife. And yes, that does mean something. NRA folks like to pretend that it doesn’t, but it does.

Anyway, the point is that guns in the home are dangerous. You’re more likely to commit suicide if you have a gun in the home. All of us, even healthy people, have suicidal thoughts sometimes. You don’t even have to be sad. Sometimes it’s just a stray thought. But whatever the case, people certainly have moments of doubt and of fear. They’re not likely to slit their wrists or anything painful, but they are likely to shoot themselves. And according to statistics, they do.

Children are often hurt as well. They find the gun, don’t know how to use it properly, and accidentally shoot their parents, their friends, or themselves. It happens every single day in the USA, and we just act as though it’s not a big deal. We all seem to casual about it. Like, “Yeah, it’s a tragedy, but it happens.”

No.

Not it fucking doesn’t.

Not here in South Korea, and not in most places.

It is not inevitable that people will shoot themselves, children will shoot their parents, or that mass shootings will occur. We are not helpless and unable to prevent the inevitable gun deaths that occur. This is a false narrative and we need to wake up.

Guns kill people.

To refuse to have any kind of reasonable restrictions on guns is to be completely ignorant and morally reprehensible.

Get over it, America.
