Now that I live overseas, I can no loner say that I am “from America” and have people know what country I mean.
This is because “America” is not a country. It is two entire continents with 55 countries total. All the people in those 55 countries consider themselves to be “Americans” because they are from “the Americas.”
So then you want to say “The United States,” but that isn’t correct either, because what we call Mexico is actually “The United States of Mexico.”
In order to refer to my home, I actually have to say “The United States of America” or “The USA.”
This took a lot of getting used to, and I admit, it still annoys me.
On the other hand, I do feel better now that I have woken up a bit and realized that “Americans” come from 55 countries and both hemispheres.
If you ever leave the US, try to keep this in mind.
It will make you sound smarter.
